What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French coloring technique in which color is hand-painted directly onto sections of hair, rather than applied uniformly through foils or a cap. The word itself means "to sweep," a nod to the sweeping brush strokes a colorist uses to place lightener or color exactly where it will look most natural. Because the color is painted on freehand, a skilled colorist can vary the placement, saturation, and direction of the color to mimic the way hair naturally lightens in the sun, with softer color near the root and more dimension toward the ends.
This differs from traditional foil highlights, which section hair more uniformly for a more consistent, all-over lightened result. Balayage tends to look softer and more blended, with a gradual transition rather than defined stripes — which is part of why it grows out with a much softer line at the root.
The Balayage Process
Every balayage appointment starts with a consultation. Your stylist will look at your current color, hair texture, and the tone you're hoping to achieve, and talk through what's realistic to do safely in a single visit versus over a series of appointments. From there, color is hand-painted in sections, processed, and typically finished with a toner to fine-tune the exact shade.
